Over the past few weeks, Beckham and his team have been doing some testing in their new Longhorn by Wesley Page getting his feet wet in preparation for his upcoming debut. From the first night out, Beckham felt surprisingly comfortable in the car, which is a testament to just how good Wesley and his team are at building fast race cars.
As the team finished up one of their test sessions, feeling pretty comfortable and ready to schedule Beckham's Dirt Late Model debut, the comment was made (almost jokingly) that Beckham should make his first start at the upcoming World Short Track Championship at the Dirt Track at Charlotte. Joey, Beckham's father, chimed in and said it was a great idea. He (as did everyone in attendance at the test) felt Beckham had the speed and car control to stay out of trouble and gain some valuable experience racing with other cars on the track.
What happened next would be nothing short of amazing!
Beckham hit the track for hotlap/qualifying along with the rest of the 46 car field and managed to qualify second in his group and third overall. This was an absolutely amazing feat, but the young 11-year-old was far from done.
The following day (Friday), Beckham would roll off from the pole of heat four and would not look back, bringing home a commanding heat race win. It was at this point that the team shifted their gears from "survive the weekend and gain experience" to "we have an honest shot to win this race".
When Saturday's main event rolled around, Beckham would find himself rolling off fourth for one of the biggest 602 late model races of the year on arguably one of the biggest stages in dirt late model racing. The youngster made quick work of making his way to the lead and never looked back. Not only was this Malone's first win in a late model, in his first race in a late model, but he was also named the youngest winner ever at the Dirt Track at Charlotte which is such a cool honor for Beckham and his family to carry around.
The weekend was nothing short of fairytale like, and the team cannot thank their partners enough for all the support and we look forward to seeing everyone at Cherokee Speedway for the Blue/Gray on Sunday, November 19th.
